A shooter opened fire at a splash pad in a Detroit suburb where families gathered to escape the summer heat, injuring nine people, including two young children and their mother. Law enforcement tracked the suspect to a home, where he died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
An 8-year-old boy was shot in the head and was in critical condition, while his mother was also in critical condition after being wounded in the abdomen and leg. His 4-year-old brother was in stable condition with a leg wound.
Initially, authorities believed up to 10 people had gunshot wounds, but that number was revised after checking with area hospitals. The other six victims, all 30 or older, were in stable condition, including a husband-and-wife couple and a 78-year-old man.
The shooting, with the shooter firing as many as 28 times, appeared to be random as he calmly walked back to his car after the attack. Police responded quickly after hearing the 911 call and were able to contain the suspect at his residence, where he was found dead.
A semiautomatic rifle and another handgun believed to be used by the suspect were recovered. The suspect did not live in the area, and officials are unsure of his motive for the attack.
Counseling services would be made available for those impacted by the shooting, as the community comes to terms with yet another tragic event. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer expressed her condolences and was in touch with local officials following the incident.
