Bryson DeChambeau began the final round of the 124th US Open with a three-stroke lead. Rory McIlroy was among those chasing him at Pinehurst.
DeChambeau was the only player under par after the first three rounds, standing at seven-under par 203. Pinehurst’s tough conditions challenged the golfers with dome-shaped greens and sandy waste areas.
McIlroy, ranked third, was on four-under 206 along with Patrick Cantlay and Matthiew Pavon. Hideki Matsuyama and Ludwig Aberg were five shots back at 208.
DeChambeau was among eight LIV Golf players who made the cut, and a win could move him into the top 10 in the world rankings.
Although dealing with hip tightness, DeChambeau had a chance to set a record with eight consecutive major rounds under 69.
The eventual winner of the last 25 US Opens has been within four shots of the lead entering the final round, which sets up a potential battle between DeChambeau and his closest rivals.
McIlroy and Cantlay’s spicy rivalry adds to the excitement. The pair had a heated exchange at last year’s Ryder Cup, but appeared to put it behind them as they started the final round together.
A win for either player could have significant implications, including Olympic qualification and major tournament history.
Other contenders like Matsuyama and Aberg also have the opportunity to make history with a win at the US Open.
As the final group teed off, the stage was set for an exciting finish at Pinehurst.
