PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) β Bryson DeChambeau secured his second U.S. Open victory on Sunday with an incredible shot on the 18th hole at Pinehurst No. 2, creating another unforgettable moment and adding to Rory McIlroy’s heartbreak.
In a final hour filled with errors and brilliance, DeChambeau finished with a 1-over 71, sinking a 4-foot par putt after an impressive 55-yard bunker shot.
βThat’s Payne right there, baby!β DeChambeau exclaimed as he walked off the 18th green.
Inspired by Payne Stewart’s legendary performance at the first U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in 1999, DeChambeau’s celebratory pumps of his arms echoed throughout the gallery.
DeChambeau’s victory wasn’t as long or dramatic as Stewart’s, but the celebration matched the intensity. McIlroy, on the other hand, suffered another major disappointment.
McIlroy experienced a series of setbacks, missing crucial putts and ultimately losing the lead to DeChambeau. Despite a strong performance in the middle of the round, McIlroy’s mistakes proved costly.
Watching from the scoring room, McIlroy witnessed DeChambeau’s remarkable recovery from a difficult lie, sealing the victory with a perfectly executed bunker shot and putt.
DeChambeau’s triumph solidified his place among the top golfers, earning $4.3 million and securing his legacy in golf history.
